The group, “The Festival Players” evolved out of the activities of the International Festival of the Sea (IFOS) and the Festival of Christmas, which have been held since 1999 in the Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard and elsewhere.
It was felt by quite a large number of people that it would be a good idea to have a group formed out of our irregular gathering usually around Spring/Summer for IFOS and November for Festival of Christmas, to have a joint aim of interacting and re-enacting periods of history in a controlled environment. It actually took two years for the idea to come to a reality.
Since our inauguration on the 11th February 2003, we have been
quite busy as a group and have found tremendous support from the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit, part of the Portsmouth Council of Community Service (PCCS) and from within the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, for which we have been so very grateful.
For a small group, we have achieved a great deal in such a short time. Without the dedicated band of people who give up a great deal of time and effort to make things happen, both from within the group itself and from outside supporters, this organisation would not exist. More importantly, it is the membership, who play the most important role of supporting the activities we become involved in, revisiting old friends and making new ones on each occasion we present ourselves to the public. To those ends we are always looking for new members to come and join us, to enjoy the friendship and interaction that this group can offer.
